A rare painting by iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo has created history by fetching 54.7 million dollars — approximately ₹460 crores — at the Sotheby’s auction in New York.
This sale marks the highest price ever paid for a painting created by a female artist, setting a sensational new world record.
Earlier, the record was held by Georgia O’Keeffe’s painting “Jimson Weed/White Flower,” which sold for 44.4 million dollars in 2014.
The Frida Kahlo artwork sold in the auction reportedly came from a private collection.
In Mexico, Kahlo’s paintings are considered national cultural heritage, making it illegal to take them out of the country or destroy them.
Thus, seeing a Frida painting appear in an international auction is considered extremely rare.
Requests have already been made to display the artwork in New York, London, and Brussels, reflecting its global significance.
