The arrest of former Nepal Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli has sent shockwaves through the country's political landscape. Police have taken him into custody—along with former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak—in connection with the suppression of the 'Gen Z' movement. It is alleged that 76 people lost their lives during this incident, which occurred last year. The new government initiated action based on the report submitted by the inquiry commission investigating this case.
Oli's party, the CPN-UML, reacted strongly to his arrest, alleging that it was an act of pure political vendetta. Oli himself described his arrest as vindictive and vowed to wage a legal battle. Party leaders further alleged that the commission's report had been deliberately fabricated.
Meanwhile, in protest against Oli's arrest, his supporters took to the streets in large numbers to stage demonstrations. In several locations, police resorted to baton charges and deployed tear gas. Security measures have been tightened as the situation turned tense.
