A Hercules C-130 cargo plane carrying currency crashed in the city of El Alto, near the Bolivian capital La Paz. The plane, which took off from Santa Cruz on Friday night with eight crew members, skidded off the runway and crashed onto a busy road. About 15 vehicles were damaged in the incident. 20 people were killed and 31 were injured in the accident. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, some of them in critical condition, officials said.
The majority of the dead and injured were civilians traveling on the road, the Defense Ministry said. The accident occurred while the newly printed currency was being transported from the central bank, and some tried to collect the notes scattered on the road. Some attacked the media filming the incident, and about 12 people were arrested by police. A thorough investigation into the incident is underway.
