Amid discussions about salary hikes under the 8th Pay Commission, a new cyber fraud has surfaced targeting central government employees and pensioners. Fraudsters are sending fake WhatsApp messages claiming to accurately calculate revised salaries under the proposed commission.
The messages often include APK files titled 8th CPC Salary Calculator or Salary Revision Tool. Downloading and installing these files can give cybercriminals access to sensitive personal data.
Once installed, the malicious application can collect banking details, SMS messages, and OTPs, enabling unauthorized transactions without the user’s knowledge. Several complaints have already been registered by victims who reported financial losses after installing such files.
Cyber authorities have clarified that the central government does not send APK files through WhatsApp or similar platforms. Employees and pensioners are advised to remain cautious and avoid downloading files or clicking on suspicious links.
