A tragic incident has occurred in the Andaman Sea, where a boat carrying Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals capsized, leaving around 250 people missing. Search and rescue operations are currently underway at full scale, with several children feared to be among the missing. The vessel reportedly departed from the Teknaf region in southern Bangladesh and was heading towards Malaysia when it met with the accident due to strong winds and rough sea conditions.
In a joint statement, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration confirmed that overcrowding on the boat may have also contributed to the disaster. The refugees, many of whom had been living in camps in Cox’s Bazar, were attempting a dangerous sea journey in search of better living conditions. Originally from Myanmar, Rohingya communities fled mass violence in 2017 and took shelter in Bangladesh, but worsening conditions in refugee camps have forced many to risk perilous migration routes.
