BEd Computer Science graduates in Tamil Nadu have requested the School Education Department to include Computer Science as an eligible subject for the Block Educational Officer (BEO) examination conducted by the Teachers Recruitment Board. They stated that while all other subjects taught in schools are considered eligible, excluding Computer Science has negatively affected the career opportunities of thousands of candidates. Although the Tamil Nadu government offers a BEd Computer Science programme in colleges, candidates and associations alleged that not recognising it as an eligible subject for the BEO post is discriminatory.
Unemployed graduate teachers said they had expected job opportunities in government schools after earlier announcements about introducing Computer Science from the primary level, but the plan was not implemented. They argued that the BEO post is a supervisory role rather than a teaching position and demanded that Computer Science graduates also be allowed to apply. However, officials stated that the subject has not been included because Computer Science is not taught in primary and higher schools.
