“Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitah” this timeless maxim displayed at the entrance of the Lord Venkateswara Temple is familiar to all. But what happens when those entrusted with upholding dharma themselves enable adharma? When officials meant to curb irregularities instead become silent witnesses and even enablers of misconduct on the sacred Seven Hills? In such a case, the coalition government has taken firm and uncompromising action. Anil Kumar Singhal, who allegedly turned a blind eye to corruption and opened the doors to adulteration, has been removed from his position.
During the previous government’s tenure, the issue of adulterated ghee used in the Tirumala laddu prasadam created nationwide outrage. Allegations surfaced that Anil Kumar Singhal, who was serving as Executive Officer at the time, played a key role in this controversy by relaxing ghee tender norms. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted to probe the matter. Following the submission of its report to the government, disciplinary action in the form of a transfer was initiated against Singhal. Through this decision, the government sent a clear message that wrongdoing would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
After assuming charge as Executive Officer on September 10, 2025, Singhal initiated the process of transferring Deputy Executive Officers. However, allegations soon emerged that he attempted to appoint individuals of his choice to senior temple positions. Amid controversy, the process was halted midway, resulting in the continuation of the existing officials. At the Tirumala reception department, two officials are mandated to man the crucial R-1 and R-2 posts. However, operations were managed with only one officer for an extended period. Criticism mounted over Singhal’s alleged negligence in filling vacancies and ensuring effective staff coordination.
Following the formation of the coalition government, IAS officer Shyamala Rao was appointed as Executive Officer. He played a pivotal role in exposing the adulterated ghee issue and successfully restoring the use of Nandini ghee. However, he was transferred following the stampede incident at Bairagipatteda and subsequent differences with the temple chairman. Singhal, who succeeded him, faced allegations of merely endorsing decisions rather than actively engaging in governance and administrative reforms. Ultimately, the same charges of administrative indifference and alleged involvement in corruption proved detrimental to his continuation in office.
