The controversy surrounding Mass Maharaja Ravi Teja's film Irmudi has taken a new turn, with the Telangana Labour Department issuing notices to the film's producers over the participation of a minor girl in its shooting and promotional activities. The department has sought an explanation on whether the applicable child labour laws and regulations were followed. The notices were reportedly issued by the Joint Commissioner of the Labour Department following a complaint filed by the Jai Loksatta Social Justice Forum.
Officials have asked the producers to clarify whether prior permission was obtained from the District Magistrate and consent was secured from the girl's parents. They have also sought call sheets, attendance records and details of the hours she worked. Other questions include whether her education was affected, whether adequate safety and welfare arrangements were made, and whether a responsible person was appointed to look after her. The department has also sought clarification on whether at least 20% of her remuneration was deposited in a fixed deposit. The producers have been asked to explain her participation in promotional events and the pre-release function as well. They must appear for an inquiry on November 4 at 11 a.m. The film, which was released on August 21, reportedly received a positive response and performed well at the box office. The department's inquiry is now focusing on compliance with rules protecting children's rights, education and safety.
