Rakul Preet Singh Reveals She Took Her First Film to Fulfil Her Dream of Buying a Car

Rakul Preet Singh has revealed that her acting career began unexpectedly while she was still in college, with a simple desire to buy a car influencing her decision to accept her first film. Speaking at the Rising Bharat Summit, Rakul recalled that representatives from the Kannada film industry approached her father after seeing her photographs and offered her a role. With little knowledge about cinema at the time, she was initially unsure, but the ₹5 lakh remuneration caught her attention. Rakul said she agreed to the project because she wanted to use the money to buy a car and become the first among her friends to own one. However, after spending around 40 days shooting, she discovered that she genuinely enjoyed being in front of the camera.

Despite discovering her passion for acting, Rakul decided to complete her graduation before pursuing films full-time. She made her screen debut with the 2009 Kannada film ‘Gilli’ and later established herself in Telugu cinema with ‘Venkatadri Express’ in 2013. Rakul said she entered the industry without external support and learned the workings of cinema through her own experiences, while also revealing that she had to turn down some major projects in the early stages of her career because of her studies. Having subsequently worked across Telugu, Tamil and Hindi cinema, Rakul is now set to portray Surpanakha in the upcoming Hindi film ‘Ramayana’.
