

The iconic Bollywood film ‘Lagaan’ has completed 25 years since its release, marking a significant milestone in Indian cinema. Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and starring Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelley, and Paul Blackthorne, the historical sports drama was released on June 15, 2001. To celebrate the silver jubilee, Aamir Khan hosted a grand event in Mumbai attended by the cast and several Bollywood celebrities. Hollywood actor Paul Blackthorne, who played the antagonist in the film, travelled from London to be part of the celebrations.
Made on a budget of approximately ₹25 crore, ‘Lagaan’ went on to earn around ₹70 crore worldwide and became one of the most celebrated films of its era. The movie won eight National Awards and earned an Academy Award nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category, becoming the third Indian film to achieve the feat. Set in colonial India, the film tells the inspiring story of villagers who challenge the British to a cricket match to escape oppressive taxation.
