Gondhal Becomes India’s Official Entry for Oscars 2027

Marathi thriller ‘Gondhal’ has been selected as India’s official entry for the 99th Academy Awards (Oscars 2027). The Film Federation of India (FFI) announced the selection on September 18, with the film chosen from 33 submissions across various Indian languages. ‘Gondhal’ will represent India in the Best International Feature Film category. Written and directed by Santosh Davakhar, the film is set in rural Maharashtra and revolves around the traditional Gondhal ritual.

The film stars Kishor Kadam, Ishita Deshmukh and Yogesh Sohoni in key roles. ‘Gondhal’ was released in November 2025 and has also received recognition on the festival circuit, with Davakhar winning the Silver Peacock for Best Director at the 56th International Film Festival of India. The film’s selection marks another significant moment for Marathi cinema on the international stage. The 99th Academy Awards are scheduled to be held on March 14, 2027.
