The Central Government is reportedly considering making CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) certification mandatory for films released on OTT platforms. According to reports, the move comes in the wake of the controversy surrounding the film 'Satluj'. The government is expected to introduce key amendments to the Information Technology (IT) Rules, 2021 to strengthen the regulation of OTT content.
The controversy erupted after ZEE5 streamed Satluj while it was still under CBFC review, despite the board recommending several cuts. The film was later removed from the platform on July 3 following government directions over concerns related to national sovereignty and security. The Centre is also considering action against the platform for alleged violations, while clarifying that state governments are responsible for preventing unauthorized public screenings.
