As the world prepares to bid farewell to 2025 and welcome 2026 with grand celebrations, several major cities across India planned large-scale New Year events featuring popular artists and performers. One such event, involving actress Sunny Leone, was scheduled to take place in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. However, the event faced an unexpected setback.
Mathura, revered as the birthplace of Lord Krishna, witnessed strong opposition from local saints and religious organisations against hosting an entertainment event of this nature. The programme, planned for January 1 at a private hotel, included a DJ night and a live appearance by Sunny Leone. Tickets for the event were already sold.
Religious groups argued that Mathura, a sacred city known for devotional activities such as bhajans and discourses, was not an appropriate venue for such celebrations. Organisations including Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Sangharsh Nyas submitted complaints to the district administration, warning of legal action if the event was not cancelled.
Following mounting pressure and in respect of public sentiments, the hotel management announced the cancellation of the New Year event. As a result, the much-anticipated programme in Mathura has been officially called off.
