In recent years, it has become common for parents to give young children phones, tablets, and laptops, making screens a regular part of their daily lives. However, medical experts warn that excessive screen time can negatively affect children’s physical and mental development. In particular, it may lead to delayed speech development and reduced communication skills. A study conducted by the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh found that children aged 18 to 24 months who use screens for more than one hour a day are at a higher risk of speech delay.
According to experts, the first two years of a child’s life are crucial for brain development. Excessive exposure to screens during this period can affect mental growth and language skills. Therefore, specialists recommend keeping children below 18 months away from screens as much as possible. For children under two years of age, screen time should ideally be avoided completely, except for occasional video calls if necessary. Experts also caution that using screens to keep children engaged with cartoons or entertainment may seem convenient at first, but its negative effects could become more noticeable over time.
