Headaches can occur due to a variety of reasons. At times, the pain may be felt in the front of the head, across the entire head or at the back. Common causes include migraine, lack of sleep, old injuries and mental stress. However, experts warn that if the headache consistently occurs at the back of the head, it could be a sign of high blood pressure (hypertension). Therefore, the relationship between headaches and blood pressure should not be ignored.
According to Dr. Ajit Jain from the Department of Cardiology at Rajiv Gandhi Hospital, Delhi, a one-time or occasional rise in blood pressure does not typically cause pain at the back of the head. However, if blood pressure rises above 180/120 mmHg, it should be considered a medical emergency, as it can lead to severe headaches. In some cases, even a mild increase in blood pressure may cause discomfort in the back of the head. In such situations, the patient should be taken to a hospital immediately for proper medical care.
High blood pressure increases pressure on the blood vessels in the brain, which can result in symptoms such as heaviness at the back of the head, blurred vision, dizziness, and vomiting. In certain cases, there may be no headache even when blood pressure is elevated, which can delay diagnosis and worsen the condition. Therefore, if you frequently experience pain at the back of the head, it is important not to ignore it and to consult a doctor promptly.
