This winter, cold conditions are becoming more intense day by day. To protect themselves from the cold, many people sleep by covering their entire body, including the face, with a blanket. However, doctors warn that this habit can negatively affect health.
According to medical experts, covering the face with a blanket or bedsheet while sleeping traps carbon dioxide, preventing it from escaping. As a result, oxygen intake reduces and the same air is inhaled repeatedly. Doctors say this can cause morning headaches, constant fatigue, poor concentration, and frequent sleep disturbances.
Doctors also explain that covering the face leads to the accumulation of moisture and sweat. Dust and bacteria present on the blanket may come into contact with the skin, leading to acne, skin irritation, and allergies. In addition, an increase in body temperature during sleep can disturb overall sleep quality.
Medical professionals caution that this habit is especially dangerous for people with asthma, sinus issues, allergies, and for infants.
Doctors advise that blankets or bedsheets should be covered only up to the shoulders. Wearing warm clothing or socks helps maintain body heat. Using cotton bedding is recommended. If darkness is required, using an eye mask is safer than covering the face. Keeping a hot water bottle near the feet can help maintain body warmth in a safe manner.
