Chikungunya is a viral infection spread mainly by Aedes mosquitoes and is commonly seen during the monsoon season. Severe joint pain is one of its most distinctive symptoms. The wrists, fingers, ankles, knees and feet can be affected due to inflammation in the joints and surrounding tissues. Other early symptoms include sudden fever, headache, muscle pain, extreme tiredness and skin rashes.
The fever usually improves within a few days, but joint pain and stiffness may continue for several weeks. In older adults and people with existing conditions such as arthritis, these symptoms can sometimes last for months. Since chikungunya and dengue may have similar symptoms initially, proper medical evaluation and blood tests may be needed for an accurate diagnosis.
Doctor’s Advice:
Doctors advise patients to take adequate rest, stay hydrated and consume nutritious food during recovery. Light stretching exercises may be helpful after severe joint pain subsides. Painkillers should be taken only under medical guidance. Aspirin and certain NSAIDs should be avoided until dengue has been ruled out, as they may increase the risk of bleeding.
Gamanika:
Chikungunya and dengue can have similar symptoms, so self-medication should be avoided. If fever persists for more than three to four days, or if there is severe dizziness, breathing difficulty, low blood pressure or unusual bleeding, immediate medical attention is recommended.
