Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has affirmed that the Telangana government is committed to eliminating identity-based discrimination in higher educational institutions. Speaking at the Secretariat during the first Cabinet Sub-Committee meeting on the draft of the Rohith Vemula Telangana (Prevention of Discrimination in Higher Education) Bill, 2026, he said the government aims to establish a peaceful and inclusive academic environment. Ministers Duddilla Sridhar Babu, Nalamada Uttam Kumar Reddy, and Ponnam Prabhakar attended the meeting. He noted that the tragic Rohith Vemula incident at Hyderabad Central University had shaken the entire nation and stressed the need for a strong legal framework.
The Deputy CM directed officials to expedite the drafting process and prepare a comprehensive report at the earliest. He instructed the formation of a dedicated committee to accelerate the bill drafting and suggested studying similar legislative efforts in Karnataka. Emphasizing transparency, he stated that opinions from political parties, public organizations, and student associations would be invited. He also revealed that Supreme Court advocate and social activist Disha Wadekar was consulted to ensure the bill is legally robust and free from complications. The government plans to introduce this landmark bill in the Assembly after final approval.
