Warren Buffett Steps Down as Berkshire Hathaway Chairman

Warren Buffett has stepped down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, marking another major stage in the long-planned leadership transition at the company. Berkshire Hathaway announced on September 18 that Buffett has been named chairman emeritus, while his son Howard G. Buffett has been elected chairman of the board. Howard has served as a Berkshire director since 1993.

Buffett will remain a member of Berkshire Hathaway’s board and continue to provide his judgment and perspective to the company. Greg Abel, who took over as CEO earlier in 2026, will continue to lead the company’s operations. Buffett had led Berkshire for decades, transforming it from a struggling textile business into a major diversified conglomerate. The latest transition completes another important step in Berkshire Hathaway’s succession plan.
