A rare Ebola outbreak in the African nation of Democratic Republic of the Congo has raised global concern, prompting neighboring Uganda to shut its border with Congo immediately. Ugandan authorities took the decision after the virus reportedly spread to local healthcare workers through people crossing the border from Congo. A task force led by Vice President Jessica Alupo ordered strict preventive measures as Ebola cases continue to rise in eastern Congo.
According to Congo’s health department, suspected Ebola cases in the region are nearing 1,000, with around 220 deaths reported so far. Officials confirmed 101 cases and said nearly 3,000 contacts are under surveillance. Uganda has reported seven Ebola cases, including the death of a 59-year-old man in Kampala on May 14. Meanwhile, in India, four people including a businessman returning from Congo were isolated in Gujarat for testing. In Bengaluru, health officials conducted Ebola tests on a woman who arrived from Uganda, but the results came back negative, bringing relief to authorities and residents.
