Tensions in West Asia are escalating once again as the United States and Iran move toward renewed confrontation, undermining fragile peace efforts. US President Donald Trump announced that America would reimpose a naval blockade on Iran and enforce strict control over maritime movement in the Strait of Hormuz. He declared that vessels passing through the strait would be required to pay a 20 percent toll based on cargo value for security coverage, while warning that Iranian ships would be restricted. Iran strongly condemned the move, stating it would not tolerate US interference and warning of military retaliation if its control over the strategic waterway is challenged.
Meanwhile, hostilities continue across the region, with reports of fresh attacks and counterattacks. The US military claimed strikes on multiple locations in Iran, while Tehran retaliated with attacks on Gulf nations including Kuwait and Bahrain. Iran also refused access to International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors for reviewing its nuclear facilities damaged in earlier US strikes. Adding to tensions, Iranian media reportedly published a list of foreign leaders as potential targets, including Donald Trump, Benjamin Netanyahu, Giorgia Meloni, and Emmanuel Macron. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded to Trump’s toll proposal, stating that Iran controls the Strait of Hormuz and would impose its own, lower charges if necessary.
