US President Donald Trump has suffered another major legal setback after a federal judge ordered the release of nearly $5.8 million in damages to writer E. Jean Carroll. The amount includes the original $5 million awarded by a jury in 2023 along with accumulated interest. The decision followed the US Supreme Court's refusal to hear Trump's appeal, effectively allowing the judgment to stand.
Judge Lewis A. Kaplan directed that the funds held in an escrow account be released without further delay. Trump's legal team sought emergency relief from the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals to halt the payment, but the request was rejected. While Carroll has secured this legal victory, Trump continues to challenge a separate $83 million defamation judgment awarded to her in another case.
