Many poor women who travel to Gulf countries in search of livelihood face severe hardships while trying to support their families. Turumani Veera Venkamma, a 52-year-old woman from East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh, moved to Saudi Arabia several years ago after losing her husband. Leaving her two daughters in the care of her mother, she worked in Al Kharj to earn a living and support her family.
However, due to difficult circumstances, she reportedly left her employer and survived through unauthorized work for several years. After the recent death of her mother, Venkamma decided to return to India but faced serious problems as her passport and visa had expired, and she could not afford a flight ticket. Social workers and SATA founder Malleshan came forward to help her, arranging a donor sponsored ticket for her return. Malleshan said many migrant women in Gulf countries face similar hardships because of family responsibilities and financial burdens.
