The Telangana government has introduced a new provision to provide immediate pension support to the wives of deceased beneficiaries under all categories of the Aasara pension scheme. Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Department Secretary issued orders on Friday, October 30, extending the existing facility beyond old-age pension beneficiaries. Until now, the provision allowing a wife to receive a pension immediately after her husband's death was applicable only when the deceased was receiving an old-age pension.
The expanded facility will benefit families of pensioners from categories including persons with disabilities, toddy tappers, handloom workers, dialysis patients, people living with HIV and filariasis patients. Under the new guidelines, if the deceased male pensioner's wife is below 57 years of age, she will be sanctioned a widow pension. If she is 57 years or older, she will be eligible for an old-age pension. The government says the move is intended to provide financial support to women who lose their spouses and prevent them from facing difficulties due to the sudden loss of pension income.
