The liver is one of the most important organs in the human body. It supports digestion, processes nutrients, produces essential proteins and helps remove waste products from the bloodstream. However, liver diseases may not cause noticeable symptoms during their early stages. As the condition progresses, certain changes in the skin, palms, fingers and nails may sometimes indicate an underlying liver problem.
Some changes that may be associated with liver disease include redness of the palms, persistent itching in the palms and soles, fingers bending towards the palm due to tissue thickening, and pale or whitish nails known as Terry's nails. Clubbing, in which fingertips become enlarged and rounded, may also occur in some chronic conditions. Hand tremors or flapping movements can be a warning sign of advanced liver disease affecting brain function. However, these symptoms are not exclusive to liver problems and may have other causes. A medical evaluation and appropriate tests are necessary to identify the actual cause.
Note: This article is for general awareness only. Changes in the hands and nails can have several causes and are not sufficient to diagnose liver disease. Consult a qualified healthcare professional for proper evaluation.
