The Sri Paschimi Anjaneya Swamy Temple, located in Maktal town of Narayanpet district, Telangana, is a well-known Hanuman shrine associated with the Ramayana. According to the temple’s local legend, Hanuman faced uncertainty while preparing to cross the ocean in search of Sita. Although he possessed immense strength, he had temporarily forgotten his abilities. Jambavantha reminded him of his powers and encouraged him to undertake the journey. Inspired by Jambavantha, Hanuman crossed the ocean and continued his search for Sita. The temple tradition also recalls Jambavantha’s role in encouraging Hanuman to bring the Sanjeevani mountain to save Rama and Lakshmana during the battle with Ravana.
The temple is regarded as a symbol of the friendship between Hanuman and Jambavantha. According to its Sthala Purana, Jambavantha consecrated the Hanuman idol at Maktal. The presiding deity faces west, which is believed to be the reason behind the shrine’s name, Paschimi Anjaneya Swamy Temple. Daily worship is performed according to tradition, while special abhishekams, leaf offerings and Sindhoora pujas take place on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Devotees also offer Vadamala and Appalamala. Sri Rama Navami and Hanuman Jayanti are the major festivals celebrated here. On Sri Rama Navami, the celestial wedding of Sita and Rama is performed, while group recitations of Hanuman Chalisa and Sundarakanda are held on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Devotees visit the shrine seeking courage, peace and divine blessings.
