Supreme Court Clarifies Telangana Local Status

The Supreme Court has reiterated the requirement of four consecutive academic years of study for claiming local candidate status in Telangana. The local-candidate criteria are governed by the Presidential Order and the applicable state admission rules. Candidates who have studied in educational institutions in Telangana for the prescribed four consecutive academic years preceding the qualifying examination can be considered local candidates, subject to specified exceptions.

The court dismissed a challenge to the four-year study requirement. Earlier judgments have upheld the definition of a local candidate under Telangana’s admission rules as being consistent with the Presidential Order. The rules also provide specific exceptions for certain categories, including children of eligible Telangana government employees serving outside the state.
