Supreme Court Acts on Delhi-NCR Rape Cases.. Painful Nirbhaya Parallels!

The Supreme Court on September 28, 2026, took suo motu cognisance of recent rape cases reported in Delhi-NCR, including the alleged sexual assault of a minor inside a moving sleeper bus. The bench led by Justice J.B. Pardiwala observed that the incidents have painful similarities with the 2012 Nirbhaya case. The Court initiated proceedings on its own rather than waiting for a separate petition seeking judicial intervention.

During the hearing, Justice Pardiwala highlighted concerns over the safety of public spaces such as parks and buses. The Court said inadequate lighting, surveillance and other administrative facilities can contribute to making such places high-risk zones, and stressed that expressing solidarity alone is not enough. The bench emphasised the need for accountability and examined the broader concerns surrounding law enforcement and public safety in the Delhi-NCR region.
