Social activist Sonam Wangchuk has responded to the viral celebration videos of members of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which emerged after Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned amid the NEET protest movement. Wangchuk, who had earlier observed a 26-day hunger strike in support of the protests, said that achieving victory is important, but accepting it with dignity, restraint, and responsibility is equally essential. His remark, “Victory must be accompanied by humility,” has sparked fresh debate on social media.
The celebrations followed over a month of protests led by CJP over issues related to the NEET examination. While some social media users criticised the celebrations, arguing they sent the wrong message considering the emotional impact of the issue on students and families, others defended them as an expression of youthful activism. CJP spokesperson Saurav Das said the gathering was held to honour volunteers and reflected the spirit of a new generation of protesters. Meanwhile, allegations that the celebrations took place at a luxury hotel were denied by the party. Wangchuk’s remarks have now added a new dimension to the ongoing public discussion.
