Social Boycott for Those Who Choose Love Marriage

A social panchayat in Arya Nagar village of Haryana’s Hisar district has passed a resolution opposing love marriages between people from the same village. According to reports, the resolution proposes social boycott of couples who marry against the community’s wishes, as well as relatives or others who support such unions. Around 1,000 villagers attended the meeting held on Sunday.

The move reportedly followed three recent marriages involving couples from the same village. Two of the marriages were between people from different castes, while the third was between members of the same caste, according to the village sarpanch Rattan Singh. He also clarified that the elected gram panchayat had no role in passing the resolution. Hisar police have said they will ensure the safety and security of couples who may face threats.
