Trump-Xi Summit: US-China Tensions Loom Over Xi’s Washington Visit

Chinese President Xi Jinping is visiting the United States from September 23 to 25 for a state visit hosted by President Donald Trump. Trump is scheduled to personally receive Xi at Joint Base Andrews, an unusual diplomatic gesture, before the leaders hold formal talks at the White House. Their discussions are expected to cover trade relations, rare-earth supplies and artificial intelligence, amid continuing differences between Washington and Beijing over technology, Taiwan and broader strategic issues. Reports have also highlighted the limited presence of Chinese business executives around the visit, in contrast with the prominent US technology and business leaders expected at the state dinner.

The visit has also drawn criticism from some Republicans in Washington. Senator Roger Wicker, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said Trump should use the discussions to raise concerns over China’s military buildup and its reported support for Iran. Wicker also questioned the decision to extend a high-profile welcome to Xi. His remarks represent his own political position, while the Trump administration has presented the visit as an opportunity for dialogue on economic and strategic issues. The summit comes as both countries seek to manage tensions while addressing several areas of disagreement.
