Trump Plans Advanced Droneport at White House Ballroom

US President Donald Trump has proposed establishing an advanced drone facility as part of the security infrastructure associated with the new ballroom being built at the White House complex. Trump has described the planned facility as part of broader efforts to strengthen protection around the presidential residence. Reports say the proposed setup could involve sophisticated military drones, although the White House has not publicly detailed the exact aircraft or operational capabilities that would be deployed there.

The US Secret Service already operates a smaller drone station near the White House, using unmanned aircraft equipped with cameras and sensors for aerial surveillance and situational awareness. The agency has expanded its counter-drone and aerial surveillance capabilities in recent years, particularly after the 2024 assassination attempt on Trump, in which the attacker had used a drone to survey the area. Experts have nevertheless raised questions about the practicality of operating a larger drone hub around the White House because of Washington’s highly restricted and busy airspace. Reagan Washington National Airport is nearby, while the region also handles significant commercial and military aviation traffic.
