Cheaper Recharge Options for Voice Only Users

Mobile users who do not need internet data could get more suitable and affordable recharge options as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) pushes for greater availability of voice and SMS only plans. Under the existing rules, telecom operators are required to offer at least one Special Tariff Voucher exclusively for voice and SMS, without data, with a validity of up to 365 days. TRAI has also been examining the availability of shorter validity options and whether prices are appropriately reduced when data benefits are removed.

The move is intended to benefit consumers who mainly use their mobile connections for calls and messages, including elderly people, low income users and those who do not regularly use mobile data. TRAI requires telecom operators to make their available tariff plans clearly accessible through customer care centres, retail outlets, websites and apps. For users who rarely need internet services, voice and SMS-only packs could provide greater choice and allow them to avoid paying for data they do not use.
