The Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission (SEC) held a crucial meeting following the Supreme Court’s directions concerning municipal elections in the state. State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha, Secretary Mallikarjuna and IG Rajakumari attended the meeting. The officials reportedly discussed preparations for conducting elections in 19 municipalities, along with the proposal to withhold the announcement of candidates’ lists until October 25.
The Supreme Court has directed the Andhra Pradesh government and the State Election Commission to submit reports on the steps taken in the matter by October 27. While acknowledging that it was aware of the SEC’s powers in conducting elections, the court observed that intervention appeared necessary after examining the preliminary evidence presented by the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). The court’s directions have brought the election process in the 19 municipalities into focus, with further developments expected following the submission of the reports.
