US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has commented on protests in New Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He said he would not interfere in another country’s internal affairs, while noting that protests and political disagreements are normal features of democratic systems. Rubio pointed out that demonstrations also take place regularly in the United States, adding that people taking to the streets reflects the presence of political debate and differing opinions. His remarks came after 20 United Nations human rights experts criticised the Indian government’s response to youth-led protests in Delhi, alleging excessive force and arbitrary detentions. The experts also called for an independent investigation into the government’s actions.
As part of his three-day visit to India, Rubio travelled to Jamnagar in Gujarat, where he is scheduled to visit a Reliance Industries oil refinery. He has previously praised India’s capacity to process large volumes of crude oil. The visit comes as the United States explores new markets for Venezuelan oil, bringing India’s extensive refining infrastructure into focus. Meanwhile, tensions in West Asia have raised concerns about shipping disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, potentially affecting energy supplies. Against this backdrop, India’s refining capacity is drawing attention as a potentially important factor in global oil trade and energy security.
