Karnataka is taking steps to strengthen its power supply infrastructure amid rapidly rising electricity demand. Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) has invited tenders to develop a large scale solar power project combining 1,000 MW of ground-mounted solar capacity with a 2,000 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The selected developer will be responsible for project development, land acquisition or leasing, and operation. Solar power generation is generally higher during daylight hours, while electricity demand often rises in the evening. The proposed battery storage system, designed to provide two hours of storage, could help the state manage peak demand and improve grid flexibility by storing solar energy for use when required. However, the actual benefits will depend on the battery discharge schedule and grid management.
Meanwhile, Karnataka is planning to develop 23 model solar villages under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited (KREDL), an associate organisation of KPCL, plans to appoint a consultant to prepare Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the villages. The reports will assess local electricity requirements and renewable energy potential, with proposals potentially including community solar projects, rooftop solar systems on government buildings, solar streetlights and solar-powered water pumps. According to official central government figures cited in the report, model solar villages had already been announced in 12 districts of Karnataka as of July 20, 2026. The state had installed 22,519 rooftop solar systems, benefiting 34,180 households, while ₹163.44 crore in central financial assistance had been released. The national allocation for the PM Surya Ghar scheme stands at ₹75,021 crore, with implementation planned through the 2026–27 financial year. Each selected model solar village is eligible for central assistance of ₹1 crore.
