Rice Price Surge Sparks Concern Among Consumers

Rice prices have witnessed a sharp increase, creating additional burden on consumers. Over the past two months, prices of different rice varieties have increased by ₹10 to ₹12 per kg. BPT rice prices have risen from ₹55 to ₹65 per kg, while Sona Masuri prices increased from ₹60 to ₹70 per kg. Traders said the price of 25 kg rice bags has gone up by ₹200 to ₹300 depending on the variety.

Despite higher paddy production last year, reduced market arrivals and supply shortages have contributed to the price rise. Increased demand for non-Basmati rice exports, transportation of rice to other states, and usage of lower-grade rice for ethanol production are also impacting availability. Allegations of stockpiling by some traders have emerged, and officials are urged to monitor illegal storage and take action to control prices.
