Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has approved the proposal to construct a barrage at Thummidihatti in Adilabad district under the Pranahita–Chevella lift irrigation scheme and divert 100 TMC of water to the Yellampalli reservoir. He stated that building the barrage at 150 meters height would minimize flooding impact in Maharashtra, and the state is ready to pay compensation if any displacement occurs. He also directed officials to immediately hold consultations with Maharashtra, and suggested taking support from Union Minister Kishan Reddy for coordination with the BJP-ruled state.
In a high-level review meeting, consultants presented detailed studies on barrage height options and water utilization capacity. Officials explained the earlier project designs and investments, noting that significant infrastructure, including canals, had already been completed. Experts recommended 150 meters as a balanced option to ensure optimal water use with reduced cost and impact. The Chief Minister emphasized using existing infrastructure efficiently and accelerating project execution for Telangana’s benefit.
Revanth Reddy stated that the project will significantly benefit farmers in Adilabad and other upland regions by providing irrigation and drinking water. He also ordered speeding up coordination with Maharashtra and instructed officials to resolve technical issues, including testing work related to the Medigadda barrage restoration. Further decisions on lift or tunnel systems for water transfer will be taken after completing headworks.
