A 28-year-old laboratory technician has died after developing severe pneumonia in Shelekhov, near Irkutsk in Russia’s Siberian region, triggering concerns over a possible pneumonic plague infection. The woman reportedly worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute. Reports said she told medical staff that a test tube containing biological material had accidentally broken while she was working. She later developed severe pneumonia, was placed on ventilator support and died. However, Russian authorities have not officially confirmed that plague caused her death.
Authorities have placed around 197 people who may have had direct or indirect contact with the woman under medical observation, with many reportedly being monitored in hospitals. Quarantine measures have also been introduced at the Shelekhov district hospital as officials investigate the incident and take precautionary steps. Reports have linked the suspected infection to Yersinia pestis, the bacterium that causes plague, but the pathogen responsible for the woman’s illness has not been officially confirmed. Pneumonic plague primarily affects the lungs and can spread through respiratory droplets.
