The Supreme Court has expressed strong concern over a series of alleged rape and sexual assault cases reported in Delhi-NCR and directed authorities to take effective measures to improve women’s safety. The court emphasised that safety initiatives cannot remain limited to official paperwork and that women should be able to feel secure while travelling on roads and public transport, including during late-night hours. It stressed that preventing such crimes should be given greater priority rather than focusing only on action after an incident occurs.
The court also called for stronger policing in public spaces, including increased and continuous patrolling and properly functioning CCTV surveillance. It observed that authorities must take firm action against offenders and create a strong deterrent against crimes targeting women. The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of several recent incidents in the Delhi-NCR region, including alleged sexual assault cases involving minors, and is examining the broader issue of women’s safety and law enforcement responses.
