Onion Prices Shoot Up.. Prices Are Burning!

Onion prices have surged across Telangana amid a decline in supplies. In Hyderabad, retail onion prices have climbed to around ₹60 per kg, while white onions are being sold for as much as ₹100 per kg. The sharp rise has added to the burden on consumers, with onion prices showing a significant increase compared with last year. The all-India average retail price of onions stood at ₹53.84 per kg on September 16, compared with ₹27.71 a year earlier, marking an increase of nearly 94%, according to data from the Department of Consumer Affairs.

Market sources attribute the price rise mainly to reduced supplies and lower arrivals from key producing regions. Telangana receives a significant share of its onion supplies from Nashik in Maharashtra and Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh. Weather conditions and lower crop yields in these regions have affected arrivals. The average onion price at Kurnool APMC stood at ₹4,329 per quintal on September 16. Traders expect the supply situation to remain tight and onion prices to stay elevated for around another month.
