Namma Metro Reportedly India’s Most Expensive.. New Report!

A new report has highlighted the cost of commuting on Bengaluru’s Namma Metro, estimating that a regular commuter would need a monthly salary of around Rs 70,400 to comfortably afford the travel expenses. The calculation is based on keeping metro travel costs below 5% of a person’s monthly income. According to the report, this income requirement is higher than the corresponding figures for Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai, placing Namma Metro at the top of the comparison.

Metro fares in Bengaluru were increased in February 2025, with the maximum fare rising from Rs 60 to Rs 90 before the increase was subsequently partly rolled back. Despite the fare changes, the metro remains a preferred option for many commuters because of Bengaluru’s severe traffic congestion. The report also notes that regular auto-rickshaw travel can cost more than Rs 14,000 a month, making public transport an important option for daily commuters.
