Modi-Trump Meeting Possible Amid Tariff Concerns

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to travel to the United States in December for the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Miami, Florida, scheduled for December 14 and 15. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor had earlier indicated that Modi would attend the summit and, in September, hinted at the possibility of a bilateral meeting between Modi and President Donald Trump on the sidelines. However, an official confirmation from the Indian government is still awaited.

The potential visit comes amid heightened trade concerns following the US enactment of the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026. President Trump signed the legislation on September 18, giving the US administration authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries that continue purchasing Russian oil or gas, with India and China among the countries that could be affected. The law does not automatically impose a 100% tariff; the decision rests with the US president.
