Lok Sabha Clears Bill to Increase Supreme Court Judges

The Lok Sabha has passed the Supreme Court (Amendment) Bill, 2026, paving the way for an increase in the number of Supreme Court judges. Under the proposed amendment, the sanctioned strength of judges, including the Chief Justice of India, will increase from 34 to 38.

The Bill was approved by the Lok Sabha without any discussion. The move is aimed at strengthening the Supreme Court by increasing judicial capacity and helping reduce the growing pendency of cases.
