India’s Slowest Train Turns a Short Trip into a Scenic Adventure

While India eagerly awaits faster trains and the upcoming bullet train era, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway in Tamil Nadu continues to attract tourists for an entirely different reason—its leisurely pace and breathtaking scenery. Running between Mettupalayam and Udhagamandalam (Ooty), the heritage railway covers roughly 46 km, with the journey taking around five hours. The route winds through the picturesque Nilgiri hills, passing dense forests, tunnels, bridges and tea plantations. Its vintage charm has also earned a place in popular culture, with the railway featuring prominently in the iconic ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’ song from Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Dil Se’.

The train travels slowly because of the steep mountainous terrain, sharp curves, gradients, tunnels and bridges along the route. Rather than being a disadvantage, the unhurried journey gives passengers more time to enjoy the spectacular landscape. Built during the colonial era and operational since the early 1900s, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway is part of UNESCO’s ‘Mountain Railways of India’ World Heritage Site. Its historic engineering, vintage character and scenic surroundings have made it a favourite among domestic and international tourists seeking a memorable slow-travel experience.
