The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has launched a public awareness campaign urging residents to conserve water amid concerns over the possible impact of El Niño on water availability in the coming months. The campaign began across Hyderabad on October 24, 2026, with announcements made through loudspeakers in residential streets and neighbourhoods. The board has urged people to use drinking water responsibly, citing reports of critically low storage levels in the Singur and Manjeera reservoirs, which supply water to the city. Residents have also been warned that heavy fines may be imposed for wasting water while washing cars or bikes or allowing water to flow unnecessarily in front of their homes.
Concerns over declining water availability have increased as rainfall remains inadequate and groundwater levels continue to fall. Water storage in the twin reservoirs of Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar is also reportedly declining, adding to concerns about Hyderabad’s future water supply. Authorities are encouraging households to avoid unnecessary consumption and adopt water-saving practices as part of the government’s broader ‘Save Water’ initiative. The campaign aims to raise awareness about responsible water use and reduce wastage before the situation becomes more challenging. Residents are being urged to treat water as a valuable resource and take collective responsibility for conserving supplies.
