India has taken a major step toward green transportation as Indian Railways has approved the operation of the country’s first hydrogen-powered train. The 1,200 kW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system-based train will soon begin trial operations in Haryana as part of a pilot project. A hydrogen storage and refueling station has already been set up in Jind for this initiative. With this launch, India will join countries like Germany, Japan, China, and the United States, which are already testing or operating hydrogen trains.
The train will consist of 10 coaches and operate at a maximum speed of 75 km/h on the Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana. It uses hydrogen fuel cell technology, where electricity is generated through a chemical reaction, producing only water vapor as emission, making it completely pollution-free. Safety systems including hydrogen leak detectors, fire sensors, and additional compressor mechanisms have been installed to ensure secure operations.
