Britain's King Charles III offered a witty retort to comments made by U.S. President Trump. Speaking at a State Dinner held at the Presidential Palace, he recalled remarks previously made by Trump. Charles responded by referencing Trump's assertion that, without American assistance, European nations would be speaking German.
"You once said that without America, Europe would be speaking German. But without us, you would have had to speak French," Charles quipped. He alluded to the historical rivalry between Britain and France that existed prior to American independence.
On this occasion, he also lauded the "special relationship" shared between London and Washington. Subsequently, Trump responded by praising Charles's speech. At the same time, however, he remarked that his administration had not received full support from the British government regarding the issue of Iran.
