House Survives Nepal Floods

Recent flash floods in Nepal caused widespread destruction, sweeping away heavy trucks and hundreds of houses. However, a house in Dhunge village of Nuwakot district stood firm against the powerful floodwaters. The house, owned by Chhatra Bahadur, was built with the help of his brother Tej Bahadur, who worked as an engineer on the project. The ground floor was constructed in 1996, followed by three additional floors five years later. Nearly 30 years after its construction, the house withstood the devastating floods and saved the lives of six people.

The family said the house’s strong construction, including thick pillars and the use of quality steel rods and cement, helped it survive the disaster. After noticing the Trishuli River swelling, Chhatra Bahadur’s family planned to move to a nearby hill. However, the floodwaters became too strong before they could leave the house. They moved to the upper floor and spent several anxious hours there. Once the floodwaters receded, all six people inside the house emerged safely.
