Gujarat has announced an ambitious initiative to transform its urban landscape by making cities wire-free by 2030. As part of the project, the state government plans to shift overhead electricity lines underground across 17 municipal corporations and 151 municipalities. The move is aimed at modernizing urban infrastructure while enhancing the visual appeal of cities.
Officials believe the project will significantly improve public safety, reduce power disruptions, and strengthen electricity infrastructure against heavy rains, storms, and natural disasters. By eliminating overhead wires, the government also aims to create cleaner and more organized streetscapes. If implemented successfully, the initiative could position Gujarat as a model for urban development and smart city planning in India.
